Timber Flooring in Geelong

Solid hardwood floors were originally used for structural purposes, being installed perpendicular to the wooden support beams of a building known as joists or bearers. In modern times a large percentage of homes are built on a concrete substrate. As such timber overlay flooring has developed over the last 20 – 30 years. Overlay timber flooring is usually milled 12mm, 13mm & 14mm in thickness with a wear layer approximately 4.80mm – 5.50mm. The preferred method of installing an overlay timber product over a concrete substrate is to first cover the entire floor space in plastic sheeting to create a vapour barrier. Then 12mm plywood is pinned to the slab using split anchor pins. The overlay timber is then fully trowel glued and secret nailed to the plywood substrate. On a wooden sub-floor, the surface is usually rough sanded to remove any contaminates from the surface and the overlay timber flooring is fully trowel glued and secret nailed directly to the sub-floor. Following installation the raw overlay timber flooring product is sanded and coated using 3 applications of your chosen coating, usually Polyurethane or Water Based coating. Stains and other coatings such as oil products are available.

Overlay timber flooring can be installed over a slab by method of direct stick to the concrete substrate, however we do not recommend this method of installation. We trowel glue a full spread of adhesive on all of our overlay timber installations, not just a bead of adhesive usually applied at 250mm wide as many of our competitors do.

Many species of timber are available in generally 19mm tongue & groove floorboard format or 12mm – 14mm overlay flooring format including all Australian Hardwood species & many other exotic species. Timber flooring is available in various grades which refers to the level of natural feature displayed in the overall look of the floor. Before a price range can be established, your requirements of desired species, board width, grade of timber, coating and method installation must all be determined.

Timber flooring will give any home a natural & luxurious look and provide a warmth to the home.
